After selecting an object to be copied or moved, and selected the basepoint, hold the shift key and your system will go into temporary ortho mode as long as you hold the shift key down.  You can also use this method with pan.  Just hold the shift key down as you pan, and you will pan perfectly horizontally or vertically.</description>
