Delete Layers

You may have noticed that when you attempt to delete a layer that is being used by entities in your drawing you will be denied.

There is, however, an easy way to delete layers that are being used by entities.

The command is LAYDEL. Type the command and you will be prompted with this:

Select object on layer to delete or [Name]:

You can select objects on the layer that you want to delete or you can type N to select a layer from a dialog box.

Be ware that if you delete the layer, the entities on that layer will also be deleted.

I’ve found LAYMRG works just as well without the risk of deleting entities that may be wanted but on that undesired layer. It work similar to what you show, select the layers you want to go away and then select the layer you want any entities to go to.

Undesired layers gone and no entities harmed in the execution of the command.

LAYMRG is an excellent tool as well. Thank you for bringing this up.

I found LAYMRG to be effective when I want to combine layers that have come from multiple bindings.

In lieu of deleting layers without know everything that is on them, I’ve found using QSELECT on mystery layers helps me see what is on them; usually they only contain blank MTEXT entities and I can delete them that way.

This was perfect! For those who like LAYMRG, go ahead and use it then. Don’t confuse the issue here. I wanted to GET RID of layers and this was the best and quickest way to do it. Many thanks.
